Sotheby’s & Christie’s End Jewelry Auction Season With Colored Diamonds

50.34 Carat Marquise-Shaped Fancy Deep Brown-Orange Diamond Ring at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Sale

Capping off another outstanding gemstone and jewelry auction season, Sotheby’s and Christie’s will hold their final auctions of the year on Tuesday, December 9, and Wednesday, December 10, respectively. Each auction house will deliver plenty of excitement in the variety of jewelry and jewels to go under the hammer, and, as per usual, exceedingly rare and atypically large fancy colored diamonds are valued at upwards of one million per piece. Notable highlights include a 3.07 carat emerald-cut Fancy Intense Purplish Pink diamond set in a platinum ring at Sotheby’s and a loose 1.42 carat oval-cut Argyle Fancy Red diamond at Christie’s.

 

Top-notch fancy colored diamonds will headline Sotheby’s New York auction next Tuesday. Among them is Lot 398, a platinum emerald-cut Natural Fancy Intense Purplish Pink diamond ring. At 3.07 carats, the GIA-certified SI2 Fancy Intense Purplish Pink diamond is flanked by a pair of bullet-shaped side diamonds weighing 0.45 carat total. The ring is size 6. Sotheby’s Condition Report indicates that the piece is in excellent condition. The Fancy Intense Purplish Pink diamond ring has a presale estimate of $1.1 million to $1.3 million.

Another highly touted attraction at Sotheby’s New York auction is Lot 407, a 50.34 carat marquise-shaped Natural Fancy Deep Brown-Orange diamond mounted in an 18K gold ring. The ring is size . Sotheby’s Condition Report indicates that the Fancy Deep Brown-Orange diamond is approximately VS2-SI1 due to a small feather near one tip. The Fancy Deep Brown-Orange diamond ring has a presale estimate of $900,000 to $1.1 million.

A platinum and 18K gold ring featuring a 30.48 carat cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut (radiant cut) VS2 Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond rounds out the sampling of heavy hitters to be trotted out at Sotheby’s next week. The mounting is set with small round diamonds of approximately F-H color, mostly VS clarity. The ring is size 6½. Sotheby’s Condition Report indicates that the piece is in very good condition, with the mounting retaining a high polish. The Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond ring has a presale estimate of $1.75 million to $2 million.

Over at Christie’s, the highlights for auction next Wednesday include an unmounted 1.42 carat VS2 carat oval-cut Natural Fancy Red diamond, the third largest fancy red diamond to ever be sold at auction. The Fancy Red diamond originates from the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia. It was previously the property of a private collector and has a presale estimate of $1.5 million to $2.5 million.

Christie’s will also offer a 21.30 carat VS1 oval-cut Natural Fancy Light Pink diamond set in a platinum ring. The substantial diamond is surrounded by a frame of small diamonds that accent the gallery and shoulders of the shank as well. The Fancy Light Pink diamond is a Type IIa diamond, and is accompanied by a supplemental letter from the GIA providing verification. The Fancy Light Pink diamond ring has a presale estimate of $4 million to $6 million.

A suite of colored diamond jewelry by Swiss jeweler Jahan will be on tap as well at Christie’s. The suite features a necklace from which seven fancy colored diamonds of various cuts are suspended in various shades of yellow and brown, with the largest being a 52.30 carat brown pear-shaped diamond dangling from the center. Also included are a bracelet, ear pendants and a ring with multicolored diamonds and diamond cuts. Altogether, the diamonds are more than 350 carats. The suite of colored diamond jewelry has a presale estimate of $3.5 million to $5 million.
